Collection: Jekyl Island Prawns
L.P. Maggioni & Company owned and operated over 140 shrimping boats around Jekyll Island as shrimp were very abundant in the area. Though the island was named after Sir Joseph Jekyll, it was commonly spelled as “Jekyl Island” from the late 1700s until the early 1900s. The Maggioni family used the common spelling of the time for their prawn’s label, which was before the Georgia State Legislature corrected the spelling in 1929 in legal and state documents. A brief history of the spelling of Jekyll Island can be found here.
