OUR HISTORY

Paul Maggioni HistoryDeveloping and preserving the fishing industry inL.P. Maggioni & Co. the low country has been in the Maggioni family for 150 years. Innovative thinkers from each generation of this family since 1870 have played key roles in how seafood is canned, harvested, distributed and even cooked today. Originally from Monza, Italy, Luigi Maggioni and his wife Natalie started a small confectionery in Savannah, GA in 1870 and the business grew and eventually thrived from there. They named their business L.P. Maggioni & Co., shown on the image of the envelope above, which recently was adapted into the new Maggioni Trading logo.  In 1883, Luigi and Natalie opened their first cannery, an oyster factory on Daufuski Island, and by the mid 1900s they had expanded to include fifteen canneries throughout South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Over the next ten plus decades, the Maggioni family worked hard to and ultimately helped transform the fishing industry. They were the first to have engine driven boats in the fisheries industry, and the first company to can shrimp in glass jars. The first fully automated cannery in the US was developed by the Maggionis and they also managed to hold onto the last privately owned canning operation on the East Coast.
