Daufuski Oysters

This label was designed in 1883, when L.P. Maggioni & Company opened their first cannery on Daufuski Island. Before leaving for Florida in the 1700’s, the Daufuski Indian tribe lived on Daufuski Island, SC. The Daufuski Indian represented on this oyster can label reflects a Plains Indian, reminiscent of the popular western dime store novels of the day, when the Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Shows were touring all over the US and Europe. The dime store novels and these shows glorified the Wild West. The proud Indian profile and the plains Indian head dress reflected the national nostalgia for native Americans at that time.
